Wool, Book 1 of the Silo Series:

The first book in the acclaimed, New York Times bestselling trilogy, Wool is the story of mankind clawing for survival. The world outside has grown toxic, the view of it limited, talk of it forbidden. The remnants of humanity live in an underground silo.

But there are always those who hope, who dream. These are the dangerous people, the residents who infect others with their optimism. Their punishment is simple. They are given the very thing they want: They are allowed to go outside.

After the previous sheriff leaves the silo in a terrifying ritual, Juliette, a mechanic from the down deep, is suddenly and inexplicably promoted to the head of law enforcement. With newfound power and with little regard for the customs she is supposed to abide, Juliette uncovers hints of a sinister conspiracy.

Tugging this thread may uncover the truth . . . or it could kill every last human alive.

Please note that the book group will not meet if
Amherst Public Schools call a snow day.

     "Two Crossings and a Community"

A talk about the community which developed on the Oxbow Island, including video clips from interviews of some of the Island's residents. Also, answers to the eternal questions: why did the island cross the river, and why did the highway cross the island?

Jonathan Moldover received a BA degree from Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut, in 1970, followed by an MD degree from Columbia University in 1974. He moved to Northampton with his wife, Rebecca, in 2015, retiring from the practice of medicine in 2019. Planning to devote more time to photography, he began to look for topics for  photo essays. He decided to focus on the changes in the Oxbow since Thomas Cole's famous painting, with a brief introductory essay. As he learned more, however, the text began to dominate the project, and he and his wife ended up working on an oral history project for the Forbes Library in Northampton, Massachusetts. The photo essay became this book.

Last Place Called Home: A Novel

As the secret federal sting operation Snakehead targets the fentanyl trade, the small mill town of Stanton, Massachusetts, becomes a battlefield in the war on drugs. In the midst of this turmoil, three mothers—newspaper reporter Laura Everett, businesswoman Mimi Sullivan, and machinist Angie Gillen—must overcome their differences and confront their pasts to keep their troubled teenagers out of the crossfire.

Help comes from two Stanton cops who break ranks after discovering Snakehead’s hidden agenda. Stakes rise as the opioid crisis deepens and Mimi’s daughter sinks further into heroin addiction. Laura and Angie’s sons try to save her, but their efforts only place her at greater risk. Ultimately, the deadly violence threatening the community compels Laura to dig deep within herself for the power to take charge.

A fast-paced, multilayered thriller that spotlights the high human costs of the drug war, Last Place Called Home is also a story about love and loyalty to family, friends, and place. Stanton is a hard place to live in—but it’s an even harder place to leave.

Please note that the book group will not meet if Amherst Public Schools call a snow day.

    Harmony in Blue and Gold:

The Travels and Travails of Whistler's Peacock Room

Located at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art, Whistler’s Harmony in Blue and Gold, or the Peacock Room as it is commonly called, is a mesmerizing, immersive experience.  Its enduring impression, however, may have as much to do with the room’s embellished and unusual history as it does the artwork.  Join Sara McComb as she shares a brief history of the Peacock Room from her tourist’s perspective.

    Wandering Stars by Tommy Orange:

"No one knows how to express tenderness and yearning like Tommy Orange. With an all-seeing heart, he traces historical and contemporary cruelties, vagaries, salvations and solutions visited upon young Cheyenne people, who cope with the impossible. In them, Tommy finds the unnerving strength that results when a broken spirit mends itself, when a wandering star finds its place, when, in spite of everything, Native people manage to survive." —Louise Erdrich

The Pulitzer Prize-finalist and author of the breakout bestseller There There delivers a masterful follow-up to his already classic first novel. Extending his constellation of narratives into the past and future, Tommy Orange traces the legacies of the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864 and the Carlisle Indian Industrial School through three generations of a family in a story that is by turns shattering and wondrous.

Colorado, 1864. Star, a young survivor of the Sand Creek Massacre, is brought to the Fort Marion Prison Castle, where he is forced to learn English and practice Christianity by Richard Henry Pratt, an evangelical prison guard who will go on to found the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, an institution dedicated to the eradication of Native history, culture, and identity. A generation later, Star's son, Charles, is sent to the school, where he is brutalized by the man who was once his father's jailer. Under Pratt's harsh treatment, Charles clings to moments he shares with a young fellow student, Opal Viola, as the two envision a future away from the institutional violence that follows their bloodlines.

Oakland, 2018. Opal Viola Victoria Bear Shield is barely holding her family together after the shooting that nearly took the life of her nephew Orvil. From the moment he awakens in his hospital bed, Orvil begins compulsively googling school shootings on YouTube. He also becomes emotionally reliant on the prescription medications meant to ease his physical trauma. His younger brother, Lony, suffering from PTSD, is struggling to make sense of the carnage he witnessed at the shooting by secretly cutting himself and enacting blood rituals that he hopes will connect him to his Cheyenne heritage. Opal is equally adrift, experimenting with Ceremony and peyote, searching for a way to heal her wounded family.

Tommy Orange once again delivers a story that is piercing in its poetry, sorrow, and rage and is a devastating indictment of America's war on its own people.
