ELM CHAMBER ENSEMBLE

Duo, string trio, piano trio and piano quartet master works presented by an ensemble of versatile musicians.

A native Taiwanese, Yu-Mei Wei, pianist, has appeared as a soloist with various orchestras in the United States, Europe, and Taiwan. As the first Taiwanese musician to tour in Poland, she treated crowds in Warsaw, Poznan, Blawistok, and Kalisz with memorable performances. A passion for chamber music propelled Ms. Wei in 1994 to form the Taipei Fine Arts Trio which performed in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. The Taipei Fine Arts Trio has released 3 recordings: Taipei Fine Arts Trio, Musical Feast from Chi Mei (Piano Trio I), and Millennium 2000. Ms. Wei’s most recent CD is New England Trios for Bridge Records.

Joel Pitchon, violinist, is an active soloist, concertmaster, chamber music player, and Professor Emeritus of Music at Smith College. He has served as the concertmaster for numerous orchestras, including the Orquestra Ciutat de Barcelona (Spain), the EOS Chamber Orchestra (NY), the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (guest), and the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra (guest). The New York Times noted his playing in the EOS production of Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du Soldat as “...superb...” New England Trios is his most recent critically acclaimed CD released by Bridge Records. Mr. Pitchon is a founding member of the Elm Chamber Ensemble.

Anthony Berner, violin and viola, is a founding member of the Elm Chamber Ensemble and the Deerfield Trio. He has performed as soloist and in chamber music concerts at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the 92nd Street Y. He has also performed at the Aspen Music Festival, the Bowdoin International Music Festival, the Saint-Maximin Festival de Musique and the East Hampton Longhouse Festival. Mr. Berner is a graduate of Harvard University where he studied with Leon Kirschner. He is a Trustee of the Marlboro School of Music and is currently on the music performance faculty at Smith College and Deerfield Academy, where he teaches violin, viola and chamber music.

Volcy Pelletier, cellist, is a native of France. Recognized as a highly effective teacher, Volcy is on the faculty of Smith College, and is currently a member of the Sage Chamber Music Society and Elm Chamber Ensemble. She may be heard on her most recent critically acclaimed CD New England Trios, presented on the Bridge label. Volcy has been featured in chamber music concerts and recitals on both sides of the Atlantic. La Vanguardia, in Barcelona, Spain, proclaimed her performance as “…masterfully interpreted…” An active chamber music performer, Volcy was a founding member of the Concert Players String Trio in London, the Forster String Trio and Kinor String Quartet in New York City. As a member of the Laurentian String Quartet, Volcy held a residency at Sarah Lawrence College in New York. She was the acting principal cellist of the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra in Spain and, while living in London, Volcy frequently participated in concerts of the London Symphony Orchestra.

Monarchs, Mishaps and Mosquitos

Stories in song with Cantabile Vocal Ensemble

Cantabile's newest program is a mélange of legends, vignettes, Bible stories and tall tales sung in five languages and set to music spanning half a millennium, from a motet found in the Medici Codex of 1518 to works composed last year for the group by local composer Clifton J. (Jerry) Noble. There are several pieces about rulers like King David and England's Queen Elizabeth I, as well as accounts of unfortunate events, including a shipwreck that turns into a Christmas party, a king bewitched by mermaids, a gullible knight, and a rather naughty mosquito. Several Renaissance composers are featured, among them Palestrina, Gesualdo and Weelkes. In addition to Noble's pieces, other more recent music will be heard, such as arrangements of an African-American spiritual and a song by English composer Herbert Howells, and prominent poets like Walter de la Mare, Robert Frost and Heinrich Heine will have their words sung.

Cantabile is a six-voice self-directed ensemble based in the Pioneer Valley that specializes in a cappella performances of vocal chamber music from the European Renaissance, as well as music of other eras up to the present. The group was founded in 2001, and since then has sung in many dozens of concerts throughout the Valley and beyond. Their most recent performance at the Woman's Club was their "Triumphs and Laments" program in December 2024. Cantabile’s current members are Aidan Linden, James Mead, Katrina Turner, Maki Matsui, Nina Wurgaft and Peter Shea. Mezzo soprano Justina Golden (a former member) will be joining the group in several pieces.
