Finding a Passion for Landscape Painting Later in Life

Maggie Hodges’ love of the beauty of the Pioneer Valley began when she moved here 40 years ago. She grew up in Philadelphia where her mother was a sculptor who exposed her to the arts at a young age. Maggie received a BFA with a concentration in Graphic Design and became a designer for Hasbro and

Spalding Sports. After having children, she designed a line of children’s clothing. Maggie’s pursuit of painting emerged when she was in her fifties. It began with a beginner’s watercolor class, and then she discovered she loved oil paints. Initially, Maggie painted portraits and still lifes until she learned about plein air painting (the act of painting outdoors). She is now a full-time landscape painter and is a member of the Amherst Plein Air Society and Oil Painters of America. Maggie travels to plein air events and has had numerous solo and group exhibits. In 2022 the trustees of the Forbes Library acquired her painting “Northampton Lights.”Maggie’s studio/gallery is in the Red Barn building in downtown Amherst.
