A Woman's Life Journey in Several Acts

Amy Mittelman, Ph.D. has had a rich and diverse journey as a historian, a mother, a businesswoman, a nurse, and a published author.

Her lived experience as the wife of a college professor is the underpinning for her most recent book Dames, Dishes, and Degrees: Faculty Wives in America. In her book she reveals what took place behind ivy-covered walls, tracing the origins and evolution of faculty wives’ clubs across American higher education.

In the past, Amy had a business, Academic Publicity, which helped scholarly authors promote their books. Because of her diverse pursuits, she has always brought skills, resources, and lessons from previous endeavors to each one. Amy notes that this is typical for women who usually do not have straight forward lives.

Amy has a Ph.D. in history from Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Massachusetts. She won the Ruth A. Smith Writing Award from the University of Massachusetts and is the author of Brewing Battles: A History of American Beer. Amy has also published articles, essays, reviews, and reference works, and has written over 600 blogs.

Bringing the World Back Into Focus: Advances in Cataract Surgery

Cataracts are one of the most common—and most treatable—causes of vision loss as we age. In this talk, Dr. John F. Warren will explain what cataracts are, how to recognize when it’s time to consider surgery, and what patients can expect from today’s advanced surgical techniques. He will also discuss new strategies for achieving clearer, more customized vision correction, helping patients regain the clarity and quality of sight that make daily life so much more enjoyable.

About the Speaker

John F. Warren, MD, was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and raised in the Berkshires and northern Vermont. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and earned his medical degree from Stanford University. He completed his Ophthalmology Residency and Cornea Fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Dr. Warren has practiced in the Pioneer Valley since 2005, specializing in cataract, LASIK, and corneal surgery, and has performed more than 25,000 surgical procedures. He lives in Amherst and practices at Longwood Eye & LASIK, which has offices in Greenfield, West Springfield, Gardner, and Fitchburg.

Join us for a conversation with Laurie Millman, Executive Director of the Center for New Americans, a Western Massachusetts nonprofit dedicated to welcoming, supporting, and empowering immigrants, refugees, migrants, and asylum seekers.

Laurie will share the mission and work of the Center for New Americans, which provides free English classes, citizenship and immigration services, community resources, and wrap-around support to help newcomers build stable, connected lives in our region.

Since becoming Executive Director in 2009, Laurie has led the organization through years of growth and deepening community engagement. Her work reflects a long-standing commitment to education, access, dignity, and helping people overcome barriers as they establish new lives in Western Massachusetts.

Julie Lapping Rivera: An Artist’s Journey Portraying Daring Women

Julie Lapping Rivera’s series Look Again: Portraits of Daring Women features woodcut and collage portraits of exceptional, pioneering women, such as Sylvia Plath, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Ida B. Wells, and Henrietta Lacks.

Julie began her career in New York, working as a teaching artist with the Studio In a School Association, Museum of Modern Art, and Lincoln Center Institute. She taught at Smith College, and currently is a faculty member and mentor with Zea Mays Printmaking in Massachusetts.

Julie is the recipient of a 2026 Massachusetts Cultural Council Grant for Creative Individuals. She is a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship recipient in Drawing, and has received grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Massachusetts Cultural Council for her work in arts and education. Her artist residencies include Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Ireland, Scuola Internazionale di Grafica, Venice, as visiting guest artist representing the Boston Printmakers, and La Muse, France.

Julie earned her MFA in Painting from Pratt Institute and her BFA in Printmaking from the University of Massachusetts.

“Look Again” was on display at the D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts, Alpert Gallery, Springfield, MA through February 2025. A larger iteration of the project is now traveling with Exhibit Enjoy. It most recently was seen at the Loveland Museum in Colorado and the Grace Hudson Museum in California.

We will join in a WHITE ELEPHANT GIFT SWAP - bring a wrapped gift (white elephant means inexpensive, regifted and fun) to swap. We will draw numbers and the fun begins.
